The People’s Fund

The Grameen Bank was started by a Bangladeshi man named Muhammad Yunus in 1972. Yunus’ idea was that if poor people could receive some capital, they could start a business or figure out some way to make a living. Although the experts continually said it would prove impossible to significantly improve the lives of the poor, Yunus’ Bank has been a huge success, improving the lives millions of people struggling to survive. Microfinancing, which is the worldwide movement to provide credit for the world’s poorest people, is based on the Grameen Bank. The People’s Fund supports various microfinancing operations around the world.


Sri Ram Orphanage

Located in the village of Hardwar in northern India, Sri Ram Orphanage has adopted approximately 50 children without homes. The Orphanage was started by the Indian yoga teacher Baba Hari Dass. It also supports the surrounding villages with a medical assistance and a school.

Ammachi is the perfect example of a selfless karma yogi. She has established numerous charity and educational institutions throughout India and North America. Ammachi has hugged millions of times in her life, often for hours as crowds take their turn to receive her blessing.

YMCA of Japan

Besides offering English classes and other programs that develop the mind, body and spirit, the YMCA of Japan is involved in charity and volunteer work. One way is they teach refugees how to read and how to find a job. Another way is they train young people to work for peace. Finally, the YMCA’s third way to help people in need is their disaster relief fund.

Hiroshima Starship is a nonprofit organization that raises money and materials to support the needs and dreams of underprivileged children in Japan and around the world: children who live in children's shelters and orphanages; children who lack food, shelter, clothing, or education; children who are ill, injured, abused, or disabled.

The food bank provides food to not only the homeless but struggling single parents and others in need. They also work to find long-term solutions to poverty and homelessness. Information is available at the website above and through Tengu Natural Foods, distributer of organic foods in Japan.

Japan’s Minsai Center

The Minsai Center is a Tokyo-based non-governmental organization (NGO) that was established to help children in Thailand and Laos attend school. The organization does this through a scholarship fund called the Darunee Fund for Education in Asia. The scholarship fund matches donors in Japan and other countries with children in Laos and Thailand who want to attend school but do not have the funds to do so.
